Nectar, the UK’s leading loyalty card is giving Nectar Cardholders the chance to turn unwanted mobile phones into Nectar points with a new scheme launched this month - mobile2points.

There are estimated to be around 66 million1 unwanted handsets sitting idle in the UK, with the average person now owning a mobile phone for approximately only 18 months2.

With anything up to 20 million3 mobile phones given as Christmas presents this year alone and another 244 million phones upgraded annually, the UK is in danger of becoming a dumping ground of unwanted handsets.

Nectar has teamed up with Greener Solutions to offer Nectar card holders the opportunity to earn more points and dispose of unwanted phones responsibly. Greener Solutions are one of the leaders in mobile phone recycling and reverse logistics. The phones are sent to less developed countries where they will be used by people without access to such equipment – extending their lifecycle and making good use of otherwise redundant technology.

Nectar Cardholders simply trade in their unwanted phones via the mobile2points link on the Nectar website, which calculates instantly how much a handset is worth in points. For example an old Motorola V3 Razr is worth 3,000 Nectar points.

With so many makes and models on the market, the amount of points exchanged per phone is dependent on its age and condition, but getting a quote for your phone couldn’t be simpler:

  1. Log onto www.nectar.com
  2. Click on the mobile2points icon on the homepage
  3. Choose the brand name of your phone
  4. Find the model of phone that you want to trade and click on ‘add to cart’
  5. The amount of points you can collect will be shown on screen

Once customers have confirmed the trade-in on-line, a pre paid envelope is automatically despatched so that the phone can be sent to Greener Solutions. Points will be added to Nectar accounts within 28 days of confirmation of trade-in.

Nectar points can then be exchanged for rewards, such as a free DVD rental from Blockbuster for 500 points, a magazine subscription for 3,000 points and a return ticket on Eurostar for 11,000 points - just a few examples of the great Nectar rewards available.

John Sheekey, Marketing Director at Nectar, says:

“We are always looking at ways for Nectar card holders to earn more points and reward themselves, and the mobile2points scheme is a great initiative which makes good use of redundant handsets and turns them into points.”
