Business Development Manager

SUMMARY

LMG is the company that owns and operates the highly successful Nectar coalition loyalty programme. Nectar launched in September 2002 and is the UK's largest loyalty programme with over 50% of UK households participating. Collectors earn points from issuing companies (Sponsors) which they can then redeem for products and services from rewards suppliers. LMG has multi-year, multi-million pound agreements with the Sponsor companies.

In addition to the 13 Sponsors, there are a number of other ways Collectors can earn points, including: Nectar Business, Nectar estores, and a variety of Nectar Clubs ranging from Wine to DVD rental.

TASKS/RESPONSIBILITIES

The Business Development department is targeted with growing Nectar revenues by:

  • Signing new points issuing Sponsors. With an excellent track record for signing up some of the most recognised brands in the UK to the programme, LMG has the ambition to fill a further number of key market categories within Nectar.
  • Developing other new business initiatives. With a strong brand and successful existing ventures there is considerable scope for identifying new opportunities, developing business cases and implementing new business extensions.

The business development process typically involves:

  1. Opportunity identification and sector analysis to determine overall attractiveness, market potential and competitive intensity of the category. This is followed up by detailed due diligence on potential Sponsor companies.
  2. Initial approach to senior management (often the marketing director) at potential Sponsor companies.
  3. Introductory meetings presenting the concept and exploring the strategic fit with the potential Sponsor.
  4. Data gathering and economic modelling to quantify the potential benefit of, and investment in, becoming a Sponsor.
  5. Responding to detailed due diligence questions from the potential Sponsor.
  6. Complex negotiation to agree key commercial terms to form basis of a Heads of Terms Agreement.
  7. Management of the legal process to final contract.

The Business Development Manager will report into the Business Development Director. The role will provide a great opportunity to gain experience selling and negotiating highly complex, multi-million pound agreements with some of the most recognised brand names in the UK. There will also be the opportunity to build people management skills, with line management responsibility for a Senior Business Development Analyst. The role will therefore suit an individual with a strong grounding in business (particularly strategy and analysis), proven commercial acumen and business development experience.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Strong academic background (2:1 or above from top-tier university).
  • 3+ years work experience, ideally with a mix between a top-tier Strategy Consultancy and a business development/commercially focused role.
  • Familiarity with building financial models (e.g. ROI, forecast models) and structuring and writing presentations.
  • Experience of building relationships at senior levels and presenting at board level.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills.
  • Hunger for personal development.
